I decided to check out the WordPress Plugin Sourcefabric wrote. So far it is actually one of the easier things to setup. My idea here is simply to make things easier for some people instead of downloading via git.

I have made a couple minor changes. The first change I made was to remove the deprecated fields in the settings. Once it is installed in WordPress, the first four fields are left blank to make it work. That includes the username and password fields, which my browser constantly tried to fill. This lead me to have to clear both boxes any time I wanted to make a change.

The second item I changed was the folder name within the zip file. There was no issue with the autoload path if you download via git. However, if you downloaded the source as a zip file (to install directly within WordPress) the script showed the path as /superdesk-wordpress-plugin/” when it was in fact “/superdesk-wordpress-plugin-master/”. This of course meant you had to add “-master” to the path instead of a straight copy and paste. After creating and editing subscribers in Superdesk so many times during my testing, I wanted to make it easier.

***There have been some reports of the installation not working on lower memory machines. If you have an issue (particularly during the “grunt build” portion of the installer) try increasing the size of your swapfile. Once I was able to replicate the issue, this solved the problem.

I know I haven’t made many posts or updates to anything as of late. It’s mostly due to personal matters.

In any case, I have made some minor changes to the previous script to allow for an easier installation of the new release candidate. You will need to download the source and extract manually. I personally, extracted the file while in the /opt directory and then renamed the extracted folder to ‘superdesk’ so that the path remains ‘/opt/superdesk/’

Once that has been done you can run:

curl -s http://bmg.dirigo.us/installrc | sudo bash

It is important to note, I doubled back and ran this on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS for the time being. I do intend to re-write everything to attempt updating to newer operating systems as time allows. This should at least be enough to get a peak at the changes SourceFabric intends to make.

I have updated the script to allow for installation on Ubuntu 18.04LTS. The new script also handles the download and extraction of the source code.

On any installation on a publicly accessible server, you MUST secure both MongoDB and Elasticsearch. The default installations of these two pieces of software do NOT require authentication. This means that if anybody finds your server, they will be able to delete your database and indexes with ease.

You should be able to run it from console by typing the command:

I have an early version available now for Ubuntu 20.04. I will be updating it to remove some of the garbage but it’s been requested. You can run that with:

curl -s https://bmgid.com/public/install20 | sudo bash

Alternatively, you can download the scripts themselves and run them locally. They are simply modified versions of what is used on github.com/superdesk/superdesk. They are as yet incomplete in my opinion and need testing. They are set to use the master branch at present. I have not had the chance to test everything.
